Our Story So Far

See What's Happening!
  • Rockland Goes Shopping

I’m not fond of shopping without Sungjin with me because Rockland usually HATES being restricted in a shopping cart. Thus, he is either crying, being held, or scurrying around. That’s why I appreciated Target’s mini-carts for toddlers. I mean, I’m still kind of chasing him around, but at least he’s being somewhat productive :) Plus, it’s just super cute. (Minus his huge mosquito bite on his cheek. hehe)

  • Potty Training Sucks

I have poop smell all over my hands from cleaning it up, trying to freshen up the place before your mom gets home.

  • I’m a “Fixer Upper”

I was watching one of those home renovating shows on Netflix and every single one of the clients were completely blown away by the design and genius of all the work put into their home. Some of them couldn’t even imagine the potential of a decrepit house turn into a model home. The professionals prepare floor plans and design ideas, often times even showing them some pretty cutting edge CGI to reveal their vision for their future home. Clients respond with a “Wow (still kind of hesitant… can you really do that?)” But they trust them to do the work anyway and after the big reveal their response transforms into a, “WOWOWOWOW! (jaw dropping amazingness, smiles all over, tears here and there) I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!! yada yada yada.” All the while I’m sitting there rolling my eyes thinking, “Hellooo. They showed you EXACTLY what they were going to do people! Didn’t you know what they’re capable of?!” Then it dawned on me. I’m just like those clients in regards to letting God renovate (or rather demolish and remodel) my life. (more…)

  • Baby Boo Boo

Had our first real scare with Rockland this past week that reminded me that as resilient as he is, he is still indeed weak. (more…)

  • Breakfast of ChampYUNS

This morning instead of the usual oatmeal/cereal breakfast, I decided to actually make some effort and fry up some banana pancakes and eggs. (It creates more dishes, but… it was totally worth it!) They were a HIT with this little guy! (more…)

  • I Am Afraid of Spiders

This morning while I was getting ready in front of the closet mirror I saw a shadow swaying on the wall. I looked to see what Rockland was playing with, but he wasn’t swaying anything. So I looked around the room and TO MY HORROR there was a big juicy black spider swinging by it’s web on the ceiling fan.

  • 1 Year Family Photos

    Sharing some pictures from Rockland’s 1-Year photo-shoot!

  • Rockland’s 1st Birthday

Here are some pictures of his birthday party. We couldn’t get all the details or pics with people, but some things are sweeter in memories :)

  • Happy Father’s Day!

For my first official Father’s Day I share a heartwarming video as a fist-pump to all you dadski’s out there.

  • The Day Rockland Was Born…

Just wanted to share some memories and never before seen photos of the day Rockland was born!

  • The Bulldog Puppy-Baby Dream

About a year and some 9 months ago I woke up one morning from an unusual dream.

  • What’s This Prickly Stuff?

Sometimes when we want some fresh air, we go out into backyard. I get a kick out of putting Rockland on the grass. He’s not used to the texture of it so he becomes so cautious! It cracks me up :P

  • First Haircut!

We loved Rockland’s long, wild hair, but it was time to tame those locks; time for the rabbi to cut his curls, time for Samson to be stripped of his strength. As much as we didn’t want to chop it off, we actually love his shorter hair do!

  • Rockcoli Resists Broccoli

Ok, so I tried feeding Rock broccoli for the first time today. Sometimes, I accidentally call him Rockcoli. So you can imagine how excited I was to have him try some. I knew he was a little sleepy, but couldn’t resist feeding him broccoli fresh out of the blender. HOWEVER, it didn’t go so well.

The lesson I learned today: never try to feed a sleepy baby, especially new foods.

  • Under the Weather

I was in complete denial that the baby and I were getting sick because I haven’t gotten sick in years. I thought maybe we had allergies or something, but NOPE. Apparently, we had symptoms of the beginnings of a cold. Anyway, just wanted to note down what I learned in treating colds for babies.

  • Blizzard of 2015

It sure wasn’t as crazy as expected, but it snowed quite a bit nonetheless :) We were glad daddy was able to work from home the past two days! (and… that he shoveled for us.) P.S. Rockland. I will never let you forget how your father went to 4 different stores called a bunch more just to find some rock salt so we don’t slip and fall. He ended up buying a little “eco-friendly” jug of rock salt for $14 because he got desperate. He’s a good man. :)

  • Baby Approved Rice Cereal

Finally started giving Rockland rice cereal. We tried Earth’s Best Rice Cereal (for no particular reason other than it being the only kind in stock at Target). But, the baby seems to like it just fine. Personally, I love that he’s moving on up in the food pyramid. It totally beats nursing and bottle feeding. Feedings are so much more fun… for now :D

  • Days Off With Daddy

“Mommy, why aren’t we getting ready to take daddy to the LIRR station?”

We usually hate Mondays because it means hubby has to go to work. Don’t get me wrong. We’re thankful he has a job and provides for this family. But, after spending the weekend together, it’s hard to get back into the grind. Not only that, but these past 2 weeks we were spoiled with two 5-day vacations for Christmas and New Year’s, and boy did we LOVE having daddy around.

  • HAPPY 2015!

Happy New Year’s from the FunYuns to YOU!
The lyrics to this hymn comes to mind when I think about the past year:
Sweeter as the years go by, sweeter as the years go by,
Richer, fuller, deeper, Jesus’ love is sweeter,
Sweeter as the years go by. (more…)

  • Christmas Candlelight Evenings

Went to the Old Bethpage Village Restoration Candlelight Evenings & Holiday Craft Show. IT WAS SO AWESOME if you’re into historical sites. When we go back, we’re totally bringing our lantern! Thank you Sungjin for always taking us to all these amazing outtings <3

  • Merry Christmas!

Celebrated Rockland’s first Christmas! When I think of Jesus’ birth, I always associate it with giddy songs and joyful praise (and rightly so as it was an incredible night!) BUT- this year, I realized there was also a quiet adoration and sweetness in being with loved ones. So this year, while we had our share of joys and laughter, we also spent the day soaking in lots of love in each others arms.

  • Foot Fetish

I’ve always had a foot fetish. I think it might’ve come from the utter dislike for my own feet. If you’ve ever seen them, you’d understand a woman should not have he-man feet like these.

  • Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!  (more…)

  • Baby Dedication

Son, we are bursting in love and tickled pink just by looking at you. We are so thankful that God entrusted us with a baby as sweet as you. You remind us daily of the love and grace of Christ, so it was our honor to dedicate you back to the Lord on November 16, 2014. More than just dedicating you, we committed our family and ourselves as parents, to raising you up in love and the Christian faith. It is our prayer that one day you grow up and make your own decision to follow Christ and build a personal relationship with Him.   (more…)

  • 100th Day Shenanigans

Celebrated Rockland’s 100th day by taking him to Muddworks  and stamping his footprints. His first piece of art work:

  • Rockland’s 100th Day!

To commemorate all those wonderful days, we made a video looking back at just the very first few days he made our family +1 bigger and whole. Mommy & Daddy love you. Gosh darn it, the whole world loves you.

  • 1 Year of Marital Bliss!

A wonderful year has passed and it was absolutely blissful. If I could sum up what I learned into one bullet point it is this:

  • Happy 1st Anniversary!

The FunYuns have made it through one glorious year of marriage!

People say that the first year of marriage is the hardest. Unsurprisingly too as two totally independent individuals and two wildly different personalities come together as one. But, so far this first year of marriage has been nothing short of wonderful.

  • Maternity Photos

Had a blast shooting with our friend, Janice Chung. It was the first time taking maternity photos for all of us, but I’d say she was pretty successful in capturing the growing baby in me and our joy as soon-to-be-parents. Thanks Janice!

  • Sungjin the Builder

I love building furniture. My mom and I always did it together whenever we bought IKEA dressers, tables, and beds frames. It’s kind of like crafting to me. You have all these deconstructed pieces and tools, and with time… BAM! You have a beautifully finished product. It can be so stress relieving.

  • Rockland’s Baby Registry

Many of you asked for our baby registry, so here it is! :) We are forever grateful for the generosity and love that we continually receive from our friends and family. This post isn’t to pressure you to buy anything, so please please please do not feel burdened to do so! (more…)

  • Surprise Surprise!

Saturday night I fell asleep in bliss thinking about all the great friends Sungjin and I have. I often think about this, but was especially reminded when a bunch of former co-workers planned a surprise mommy-to-be party for me. (more…)

  • Children See, Children Do

Now that I’m out of my 20’s, no longer a bachelor, and have become an expectant father, I guess it’s time for me to look at some parts of “me” seriously.  Now there’s the lovable, huggable, “aw shucks”, teddy bear-esque quality of me that everyone comes to love at psychotic proportions.  But then there’s the grimacing & mischievous instigator who loves a good fight and prods relentlessly at any button available to be pushed. (more…)

  • When Tempers Flare…

I chuckled when I saw this painting by one of my favorite artists, Norman Rockwell. Loved that man’s work ever since I saw some hanging at a HomeTown Buffet when I was younger. Anyways, I chuckled when I came across this one because it reminded me of Sungjin and me. hehe.

  • Baby Reveal

    Drumroll please… (pudadadadada)

  • Halfway Mark!

We are finally at the halfway mark! THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!

  • New Year’s Revelations… about Pregnancy

Just wanted to share some revelations I’ve received throughout my first trimester:

  • Wedding Photos!

Just wanted to share some of our wedding photos with everyone, especially our loving friends & family that were unable to join us that day :) Big thanks to our photographer, Michael Simonitsch. Bravo!

  • Jane and the Elusive Hot Pocket

Jane is a great cook.  She can sizzle kalbi and samgyupsal on a fry pan like no other.  But when it comes to baking in our oven? Well…… (more…)

  • Easy Meals

Before we got married I didn’t really cook all that often. And the meals I did cook on those rare occasions aren’t really things that take much skill or creativity. I’d whip up spam, eggs, fried rice, string beans, pasta, and ramyun noodles for me and my little brother. You know, nothing special.

  • Getting Glamorous for the Wedding

Sungjin always complains I wear too much make-up- no matter how little I apply. But, on our wedding day, I wore a butt load of make-up. My make-up artist wanted to put MORE on me, but I was like, “Oh no, I think this is enough. I look like a concubine!” I sure hope all the beliefs that more make-up means pretty photos is true! I can’t to see our photos and video from Michael Simonitsch & Frank Ahn!

  • We’re Famous!

Well not quite, but believe it or not, our wedding ceremony and some pics were posted on a Korean Christian website!  Link to the article HERE.   (more…)

  • Sneak Peek! Wedding Guest Book

Get a sneak peek into our Wedding Guest Book for family & friends to sign on our big day!  (more…)

  • Weee! Engagement Photos!

Wahoo! Our engagement photos came out!

  • Engagement Photo Prep!

Probably the best part to do out of all this chaos of Wedding Planning would be the engagement photos.  The next best thing would be being done with the wedding.  But we still have a little time to go before that happens. (more…)

  • Invites!!!!!

Now that the invites are FINALLY making its rounds to our guests, we wanted to give you a little glimpse inside the envelope and see what P8PER HEARTS has designed for us.

  • Wedding Bands!

Oh YEA! We finally got them.  Do you have any idea how hard it is to find something so simple yet unique?  Or something you just plain like?  There’s way too many options out there. (more…)

  • New Home = Registry

After an exhaustive and stressful search, Sungjin & I were finally able to find a cozy 1 bedroom home in East Meadow, Long Island. It’s about 20-25 minutes away from our current homes, but it’s well worth the drive. We’ll post pictures of our new home sometime in the first week of September :) (more…)

  • Storyboard Sketches of Us!

Howdy Howdy Howdy Everyone! As the invites are just about to get printed, I just wanted to send you guys a quick tease. (more…)

  • Let’s Work Out!

So, we’re about 2 months away from the wedding and you know what that means! Time to crunch abs, tone arms, and drop that dead weight!

  • The Countdown Begins!

A Video Message from the FunYUNS! (more…)

  • Happy Anniversary

I’ve been trying to write a fresh post, but as most of you bloggers know- writing aint easy. It’s probably one of the least organic things I know how to do. So, props and kudos to all you writers out there. I commend your hard work.

Anyways, Sungjin and I got to celebrate our 2 year anniversary last month. (more…)

  • FunYun’s DIE HARD!

We Almost died.  Yes it’s true.  It was a near-death experience that Jane and I will hopefully never have to experience again. (more…)

  • The Story So Far…

This is the time I get to brag about my fiance. One of his dreams in life is to write a book & get published. And well… I’m sure this book isn’t exactly what he had envisioned, but I got a glimpse of what his future will entail. He made me a book I’ll want to read over and over again.

  • Date at the Aquarium!

Jane and I were really looking forward to celebrating her birthday.  We haven’t been able to spend a day together in a while and because it’s so early in January, it was our way of kicking off 2013.  So what were we planning to do?!  Go to SPA CASTLE!  Yeap, that’s how us old fogies get down.  It was good for me, I didn’t have to plan anything cause that’s all she wanted to do.  However, thanks to an annoying monthly visitor that I want to punch in the face, our plans changed. (more…)

  • The Gift!

“The Gift” was truly a labor of love for me.  I was very, very, VERY reluctant to do the movie as Jane wanted this done within a neck-breaking 3 weeks.  I thought it was impossible, with enough going on in our life already and just the sheer volume of work required of making any video, I was very discouraged and discouraging of the idea.  She was very adamant that a video had to be done and said that if I wasn’t gonna help her then she would do it herself.  With enough on her plate already and I mean come on…how was I not going to help my fiance with anything video related. (more…)

  • Mommy-GANGNAM Style! (How To)

12.12.12.  To some, it’s the last time we’ll see such a date this century.   To our friends Eddy & Karen, it’s their wedding day.  For us, it’s when we saw my mom do GANGNAM Style with two black dudes. (more…)

  • Mom & Dad Meet the In-Laws

Recap: Dinner with Parents at Biwon Restaurant

So, our parents met for the first time last night. This was the first time any of us got to experience this joyous, or rather nerve-wrecking, gathering as Sungjin and I are the first children to marry in our families. It was obvious none of knew what to do, what to wear, or what to say… and that we’d all be playing it by ear. (more…)

  • The Ring: A Diamond Guide for Men

The stress & privilege of any man-ready-for-marriage begins when searching for the perfect symbol of commitment: THE RING. No not the horror movie, but equally as frightening.

  • Megaphone Jane

People often tell Sungjin and I that we’re just like each other. But, more often than not, I find us to be SO very different. Some differences are more subtle and petty, but others are so aggravating that it provokes us to argue.

Although we’d rather not bicker altogether, Ruth Bell Graham says those disagreements are actually a good thing. She believes “that if two people agree on everything, one of them is unnecessary” (This Momentary Marriage 9). I try to remember her words whenever I feel the crazy Jane creeping up on me. I mean we are two imperfect people coming together; two opposites that attracted.Of course there’s going to be some shaking. And you know what? Some things need some shaking. (more…)

  • Woes of Wedding Planning

First of all, I’m not a great planner. I don’t consider myself that spontaneous or anything, but it’s just hard for me to plan something when my vision is all over the place.

  • Debate: Marriage In Heaven?

Jane wanted us to start reading a book on marriage together and before I even get to the first page, I read the dedication and I’m like HOLD ON.   Not exactly the book that gets an engaged man in the mood to get a jump start on wedding planning. (more…)

  • Sleep Positions and Personality

There are studies that theorize the position you sleep in reveals a lot about your personality!

  • Surgery for the Wedding?

Since I quit smoking a long while back, I’ve been eating a lot.  So the long road to transform from a pillowed man to a chiseled adonis presents its challenges.  My hope is that by the time of our wedding, I won’t look like the guy who bites his bride thinking shes a cupcake.  Being the lazy man I am, I may have found a simple solution.  It’ll only cost me $6,253 bucks.

  • The Proposal: Jane’s Account

Falling in love is such an incredible experience; you have to go through it to understand, or else you’ll just think we’re crazy.  This is the case with Sungjin and me.

We both knew early on that we didn’t have to look for a husband/wife anymore after meeting each other. But, when I told my family how I felt they literally thought I was bewitched and insane. Thankfully after 1 1/2 years of getting to know Sungjin, I think they’ve come to love and welcome him as family.

So here is my account of our engagement:

  • Venue Hunt!: Queens County Farm

Come check out some photos that we took on our Wedding Venue Hunt at the Queens County Farm Museum!
